Mets Claim Right-Hander Dennis Santana Off Waivers From Minnesota Twins

The five-year MLB veteran has spent time in the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers before being claimed off waivers by Minnesota this winter.

The Mets have claimed right-handed pitcher Dennis Santana off waivers from the Minnesota Twins, the club announced.

Santana, 26, debuted for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018 and stuck with them until 2021 when he was traded to the Texas Rangers.

The Dominican Republic native played with the Rangers through last year before being traded to the Atlanta Braves in Dec. 2022.

His time in Atlanta was short lived, however, as he was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins last month.

In 2022, Santana appeared in 63 games (58 2/3 innings) for Texas and was worth 0.7 fWAR and had a 5.22 ERA, 3.35 FIP and a 4.19 xFIP.

Santana is an intriguing arm for New York to take a flyer on. His fastball velocity and spin ranked in the 91st and 92nd percentile in 2022, respectively, according to Baseball Savant

Santana's hard hit rate (84th percentile) and barrel rate (89th percentile) are also interesting aspects of his game. The right-hander's slider also had 39.4 inches of vertical drop, while his changeup had 17.2 inches of horizontal break.

With the Mets bullpen enduring a slew of injuries over the last couple weeks, arms like Santana are worth taking a shot on, as low-risk, high reward options.
