The New York Mets and Pete Alonso continue to have contract talks during the offseason.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Alonso will not be traded this offseason. DiComo notes that Scott Boras and David Stearns recently met. It’s uncertain if there were extension talks.

“We just kind of let him know that when it comes to the Polar Bear, we’re not in contract hibernation,” Boras said.

This is good news for the Mets as Boras is typically tough to work with. He will do whatever he can and wait as long as he can for his clients to get top dollar. With both sides already in discussion, this should be a positive for the Mets keeping the right-handed home run hitter.

The question for New York is how much they’re willing to pay him. Perhaps we could see a deal similar to the one that the Atlanta Braves gave Matt Olson in 2022. Olson signed an 8-year, $168 million deal. With similar ages and one year of service time ahead of Alonso, this could be the easiest comparison. It remains unknown if the Mets view him as someone of Olson’s status, or if Alonso wants more than Olson.

It’s uncertain when the organization is going to fill the GM role, but it doesn’t seem to be in the immediate future. That won’t change the outcome of keeping Alonso around. David Stearns, Mets president of baseball operations, seems to be high on Alonso and his future in New York.

“We’re fortunate to have him,” the president of baseball operations said. “I’m looking forward to watching him play this season, and I’m not going to predict the future.”

Pete Alonso finished the season with 46 home runs and drove in 118. Those figures were both top-three in baseball. The 28-year-old Alonso now has three seasons with 40-plus home runs. Alonso ranked above the 91st percentile in xwOBA, xSLG, and Barrel %, according to Baseball Savant
