Mets Reportedly Could Land Former Most Valuable Player This Offseason

One former Most Valuable Player could be a target for the Mets this offseason

The New York Mets could add some serious firepower to the lineup this upcoming offseason.

New York has been a disappointment but that doesn't mean the club can't be competitive in 2024. The Mets won 101 games last year and although they have struggled this season, are only a few moves away from getting back to the postseason. New York certainly will need to address the starting rotation, but the club could use another power bat. One player the club reportedly could target is Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"Let’s face it, they didn’t hit enough this year," Heyman said. "We beat up the pitchers all year long, but they underperformed almost as badly at bat. There are two obvious choices here. I’d go Cody Bellinger over Matt Chapman for extra offense, and extra versatility. Bellinger could mostly play center field and move Brandon Nimmo to left field, where he’d be outstanding, and could also spell Pete Alonso at first base."

Bellinger would be a perfect fit for a Mets squad that could use a lift. The 2019 National League Most Valuable Player has had a resurgent season for the Cubs. Bellinger -- who struggled with injuries over the last few seasons -- has been healthy this year and it has resulted in his best season in years. The 28-year-old slugger has clubbed 25 home runs and driven in 91 RBIs to go along with an impressive .311/.356/.534 slash line in 119 games so far.

The two-time All-Star likely will be the top offensive player on the open market this upcoming offseason and could make perfect sense for the Mets. It's unclear exactly what New York will do, but the club at least should consider a signing.
