Mets Reportedly Have Discussed Signing Postseason Star To Bolster Rotation

Could the Mets make one more major splash for the rotation?

The New York Mets got some bad news recently.

Mets ace Kodai Senga already is dealing with an injury and it's unclear exactly when he will be back on the mound. New York is in a better spot than it was at the end of the 2023 season but a lot of the club's possible success in 2024 relates directly to Senga.

New York doesn't have much depth in the starting rotation but if the club wants to make another addition there still is solid options available in free agency.

One player the Mets reportedly have discussed internally is postseason star Jordan Montgomery, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"Though (Blake Snell) is willing to do short term with opt-outs, the consistent, durable Montgomery is looking long," Heyman said. "The Red Sox held a Zoom call, but it feels like ownership is concentrating on golf, soccer, and hockey and expanding its sports empire.

"The Rangers RSN issue was resolved, but ownership incentive probably fell when they won the World Series (Montgomery helped there, ironically enough). The Mets have discussed it internally. The (New York Yankees) seem to prefer Snell. The (San Francisco Giants) could be in play if they don’t get Snell."

Montgomery spent the 2023 season with the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers and was impressive. He has been durable and hasn't logged an ERA above 4.00 since the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign.

The big lefty won't be as expensive as someone like Blake Snell and the Mets certainly could afford a deal. New York could use more rotation depth and Montgomery would make a lot of sense.
