The New York Mets likely will be sellers ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline.

New York has struggled this season although it entered the 2023 campaign as World Series hopefuls. The Mets won 101 games in 2022 but that success hasn't carried over to this season, despite an improved roster on paper. Inconsistent play has plagued the club and now the Mets currently sit in fourth place in the National League East with a 47-53 record.

While there's no way for sure to know exactly what the club will do, it seems like they will be sellers in some capacity. That may not mean unloading star duo Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, but they likely will offload some of their veterans while recouping prospects. Verlander specifically has had his name in trade rumors lately and although a move is unlikely, nothing can be ruled out at this point. Even though this is the case, the three-time Cy Young Award winner reportedly hasn't discussed a trade with the club, according to Fox Sports' Deesha Thosar.

"Justin Verlander on trade deadline: 'I would hope that if there was any chance of that, Billy would come & talk to me & that hasn’t happened," Verlander said as transcribed by Thosar. "'I’m focused on being a Met. I want to win here. … Obviously, it hasn’t gone according to plan just yet, but I didn’t sign a 1-year deal.'"

The nine-time All-Star made his feelings on a potential deal known recently. Verlander likely won't be traded as he holds a no-trade clause and has a massive contract. While this is the case, speculation likely won't die down until the trade deadline actually passes on August 1.
