Mets Reportedly 'Still Showing Interest' In Signing Gold Glove Outfielder
The New York Mets have been relatively quiet this offseason, and many wonder how the team will address key issues going into 2024.
Retooling the pitching staff has been at the forefront of focus for the Mets this winter but that's not the only area that needs aid.
The Mets' outfield depth is lacking and recent reports indicate that New York is interested in pursuing a coveted free agent outfielder.
"Mets are among the teams still showing interest in Michael A. Taylor," New York Post's Mike Puma reported Tuesday.
Taylor batted .220 with 36 extra-base hits including 21 home runs, 51 RBIs, and .720 OPS in 129 games played for the Minnesota Twins last season.
The 32-year-old outfield is best known for his defense, leaning on speed and an elite arm -- ranking in the top 90th percentile for arm strength, according to Baseball Savant. He also logged nine outs above average -- 94th percentile -- last season and has a Gold Glove under his belt.
The Mets' outfield arsenal is in need of bolstering as the four-man depth chart only includes two players who logged over 50 RBIs last season -- Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo.
Adding Taylor to the Mets' lackluster outfield depth would provide the club with a player who can command any position in the outfield and produce runs at the plate.
Signing Taylor will not be the big signing Mets fans are looking for but his acquisition would help solve an area of concern that can't be ignored.
