Mets Sign Intriguing Former San Francisco Giants Left-Hander

The New York Mets have signed an intriguing veteran left-handed pitcher to a two-year deal.

The New York Mets have signed left-hander Sean Manaea to a two-year deal worth $28 million, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

The deal includes a player opt-out after the 2024 season.

After the Mets traded Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander at the trade deadline last season, their pitching was thin. They've now added Manaea, Luis Severino, and Adrian Houser. The rotation isn't great by any means, but there's finally some depth in there, a concern they faced heading into the offseason.

The 31-year-old was drafted in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals. He made his debut in 2016 with the Oakland Athletes and spent six seasons with the club. Manaea was with the San Diego Padres in 2022 and the San Francisco Giants in 2023.

This will be the first time that Manaea isn't pitching for a team on the West Coast.

New York made it clear during the deadline in '23 that they didn't plan on competing in the '24 season. However, they wanted to add players who could help them be competitive. The recent moves prove that they're doing exactly that after signing Harrison Bader to a contract earlier in the week and now signing Manaea on Sunday morning.

Manaea has had his struggles, but at his best, he has great stuff. He posted an ERA of 4.44, a WHIP of 1.241, and a FIP of 3.9. If he can eat up 140-plus innings,  which he's done in five of his eight seasons, this is a great deal for the Mets.
