Baseball Legend's Son Among Mets International Signing Class

The New York Mets have agreed to terms with several international players, including the son of Vladimir Guerrero Sr.

The New York Mets are busy on the first day of the international signing period, as they’ve reportedly reached agreements with three Top 50 prospects and the son of a MLB Hall of Famer, per MLB Pipeline.

It’s part of a big international class for the Mets, who have $5.284 million in base signing pool money to spend as the signing window opened on Monday. The Mets have not formally announced any agreements.

Vladimir Guerrero Sr’s son, Vladi Miguel Guerrero, is the prospect with MLB bloodlines who has an agreement with the Mets worth a reported $117,000. The money is small, but the payoff could be significant.

His father is in the Hall of Fame. His half-brother, Vladimir Jr., is the starting first baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays. That in of itself makes this agreement significant.

But, as of today, he’s not the most highly-touted player in the class.

Yovanny Rodriguez, a Top 10 prospect as rated by MLB Pipeline, has agreed to join the Mets for an international signing bonus of $2.85 million. The Venezuelan catcher is considered an advanced catching prospect with pop. He was MLB Pipeline’s No. 6 overall player.

The other prospects rated in front of Rodriguez are Dominican Republic shortstop Leo De Vries, who signed with the San Diego Padres; Dominican Republic outfielder Paulino Santana, who has agreed to a deal with the Texas Rangers; Venezuelan shortstop Jose Perdomo, who has agreed to a deal with the Atlanta Braves; Dominican Republic shortstop Fernando Cruz, who has agreed to a deal with the Chicago Cubs; and Dominican Republic outfielder Adolfo Sanchez, who has agreed to a deal with the Cincinnati Reds.

The Mets agreed to terms with two other Top 50 prospects. Shortstop Jensy Rivas is rated No. 31 overall and outfielder Edward Lantigua is rated No. 41 overall. Both are from the Dominican Republic. Lantigua is expected to sign for $950,000 while Rivas is expected to sign for $500,000.
