The New York Mets will be without their best player for quite some time.

On Friday, the team announced that All-Star slugger Pete Alonso has been diagnosed with a bone bruise and sprained left wrist. He is expected to miss the next 3-4 weeks.

Alonso underwent additional testing in New York, which resulted in this prognosis. Initial X-Rays showed no fracture and so did further testing by Mets' team doctors.

Alonso was hit by a Charlie Morton 97 mph fastball on Wednesday, which forced him to miss the remainder of the Mets' series against the Atlanta Braves.

The Mets were ultimately swept in this series and have lost six games in a row to fall to 30-33 on the season. New York is 8.5 games behind the Braves in the NL East.

Alonso was leading Major League Baseball with 22 home runs and leading the National League with 49 RBIs. But he will now be out until at least July, which has put his 57 home run pace in jeopardy.

With Alonso out, the Mets have called up infielder Luis Guillorme to take his spot on the 26-man roster. As for replacing him at first base, that will likely be a combination of Mark Vientos and Mark Canha.

Regardless, losing Alonso, who is their best player, is a massive blow for a Mets team that has already been in a free fall as of late.
