New York Mets Outfielder Brandon Nimmo Week-to-Week with Ankle Sprain

Nimmo injured himself during Friday night's Spring Training game against the Miami Marlins.

The Mets will be without their center fielder for a little while.

On Saturday, Mets general manager Billy Eppler announced that Brandon Nimmo suffered a low grade knee and ankle sprain and is considered week-to-week.

Nimmo, 30, signed an eight-year, $162 million contract this winter to remain in New York, with the team that drafted him out of high school in 2011.

The Wyoming native enjoyed his best MLB season in 2022 when he hit .274/.367/.433 with a 134 wRC+, .353 wOBA and was worth 5.4 fWAR.

With Nimmo on the shelf, the Mets will have to shuffle their outfield around a bit. Starling Marte could see reps in center field, and Tommy Pham might get more regular playing time in the short term.

The Mets could also explore the open market, where Jurickson Profar is still a free agent and played over a thousand innings in left field in 2022 with the San Diego Padres. Plus, his added versatility would still benefit the Mets when Nimmo returns.

Regardless, it seems as though Nimmo has avoided the worst, especially after what the Mets saw happen to their closer Edwin Diaz earlier this week.
