The next talented prospect in the New York Mets’ pipeline needs an MRI on his injured ankle, per the New York Post.

Ronny Mauricio, an outfielder with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, will undergo the procedure after dealing with soreness after a collision in a game about a week ago. Per the Post, there is still soreness and the Mets want to get a better look at what’s happening.

Mauricio, who plays shortstop, is slashing .320/.360/.524/.884 with 23 doubles, eight home runs and 35 RBI in a breakthrough season.

Mauricio has never finished a minor league season with an average better than .300.

The switch-hitting 22-year-old is poised to follow catcher Francisco Alvarez, who is helping to power the Mets’ offense in the wake of the injury to first baseman Pete Alonso. While he’s played primarily shortstop in the minors — the same position as Francisco Lindor — he can also play second base and has done plenty of time at designated hitter.

MiLB.com has selected Mauricio as a three-time organizational All-Star and was named the South Atlantic League’s top prospect in 2021 while he was with Brooklyn.

Baseball America ranks Mauricio as the game’s No. 64 prospect overall.
