The New York Mets are unlikely to add a designated hitter before the offseason concludes, but they must acquire insurance at third base in case Brett Baty struggles again.

That's where Gio Urshela comes in, who the Mets and others are showing interest in, according to MLB insider Jon Morosi.

Urshela's season was cut short in 2023 due to a fractured pelvis that didn't require surgery. Prior to the injury, he hit .299 with a .703 OPS for the Los Angeles Angels.

The 32-year-old has been a productive big-leaguer since breaking out with the Yankees in 2019. He is a solid hitter and provides Gold Glove caliber defense at third base.

Urshela would be an upgrade at third base for the Mets should Baty falter, but the team could utilize him at other positions as well.

The only negative to bringing in Urshela is that it may stunt Baty's growth because he will be looking over his shoulder, putting more pressure on himself to perform with a proven veteran waiting behind him. That may not be the best move to help Baty, who was once a top prospect in baseball, in his development.

Regardless, the Mets must have an insurance plan at third base if Baty needs to go back to the minor leagues, and Urshela is an ideal fit. It makes sense, now let's see if the Mets pull the trigger.
