New York Mets Make First Spring Training Cuts

The New York Mets made several spring training cuts, most of which were Top 30 prospects headed to minor-league camp.

The New York Mets made their first spring training cuts on Sunday, per MLB.com, with many of them top prospects that will now transition to minor-league camp so they can get more playing and practice time.

Some of these players could be part of the MLB Spring Breakout game later this month. The rosters are set to be announced on Friday and should feature some of the best prospects in the Mets’ organization. They can also continue to play in MLB spring training games if needed.

As for the cuts, they included MLB.com Top 30 prospects catcher Kevin Parada, outfielder Drew Gilbert, infielder Jett Williams, infielder Luisangel Acuña, pitcher Mike Vasil and pitcher Christian Scott.

Also on the list was pitcher Eric Ozre, pitcher Cam Robinson, pitcher Danny Young and pitcher Kolton Ingram.

The Mets have to get down to 26 players on their active roster before their regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.

It’s possible that Gilbert and Acuña could join the Mets at some point this season. Both should be starting their seasons at Triple-A Syracuse. Both were acquired in separate trades last year. The Mets traded pitcher Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers for Acuña and traded pitcher Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros for Gilbert, along with another outfield prospect in Ryan Clifford.

Williams is one of the most highly-thought of prospects in the organization and could start his 2024 season at Double-A Binghamton. Vasil is a highly-respected pitcher in the organization who ended last season at Syracuse. He could become a Mets starter at some point in the next two seasons.

Parada was one of college baseball’s best catchers when the Mets selected him in the first round in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He reached Double-A Binghamton last year and as Francisco Alvarez in front of him in the Majors.
