San Diego Padres Claim Catcher Gary Sánchez Off Waivers From Mets

The longtime Yankee spent less than a week in the majors with the Mets before being designated for assignment.

The San Diego Padres claimed catcher Gary Sánchez off waivers from the New York Mets on Monday.

Sánchez, 30, signed with the Mets on May 9 after opting out of his contract while in the minor leagues with the San Francisco Giants.

A longtime Yankee, Sánchez appeared in just three games for the Mets after debuting on May 21. He was designated for assignment four days later.

For the Mets, the team opted to keep Tomás Nido in the fold when he returned from the injured list last week instead of giving Sánchez an extended look.

San Diego will hope that Sánchez can reclaim some of the magic he had when he was an All-Star in 2017 and 2019.

Luis Campusano is currently on the injured list for the Padres, so they have been rolling with Austin Nola who has struggled to the tune of -0.7 fWAR this year, and Brett Sullivan who is a 29-year-old rookie.

Sánchez will now give them another option while Campusano is out.

The Mets will roll with former No. 1 prospect in MLB Francisco Álvarez and Nido behind the dish for now, but things could change one way or the other when Omar Nárvaez returns likely next month.
