The New York Mets enter the 2024 season in a different mindset than they were in last year. With World Series expectations in 2023, pressure was at an all-time high for the club.

With a different approach heading into this season, not all players are feeling the same type of pressure.

A massive season awaits Mets slugger Pete Alonso as he enters a contract year.

Will New York land an extension before the season is over or will Alonso hit the market as a free agent?

Better yet, how will Alonso react to the pressure he's bound to face this season?

That's the question that Anthony DiComo of MLB.com is asking about the Mets this year. He's curious how Alonso will react, knowing how much potential money is on the table.

DiComo notes that there doesn't appear to be a plan to complete an extension before he hits free agency.

It's questionable why New York wouldn't want to get a deal done. Allowing Alonso to test the open market will likely only raise his price and isn't a good sign for future free agents.

Given the amount of money that Steve Cohen has been willing to spend in the past, allowing a guy who's proven that he can play in the spotlight of New York to possibly walk is questionable.

Alonso was drafted by the Mets in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He made his debut in 2019 and hit 53 home runs. In every full season, the right-handed slugger has hit at least 37 home runs.
