Orioles Legend Named Ravens Honorary Captain Vs. Texans

One of the biggest legends in Baltimore Orioles history will be there to support the Ravens on Saturday.

The Baltimore Ravens have named Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. as their honorary captain for Saturday’s AFC Divisional Playoff game against the Houston Texans at M&T Bank Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. local time.

Ripken will be part of the pre-game festivities, as the Ravens will play their first game in this postseason. As the No. 1 seed, Baltimore had a bye during the Wild Card playoffs.

The Ravens are attempting to reach the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2013 season, when they beat San Francisco.

Ripken is known best to baseball fans as the game’s ironman, as he played in a MLB-record 2,632 games, breaking the record previously held by New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig.

As a player, he spent his entire 21-year career with the Orioles, where early in his career he won the 1982 American League Rookie of the Year award and helped the franchise win its most recent World Series title in 1983.

By the end of his career he was a 19-time All-Star, a two-time American League MVP, a two-time AL Gold Glove winner, an eight-time Silver Slugger, and the 1992 Roberto Clemente Award winner.

He is also a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame, the Major League Baseball All-Century Team and had his No. 8 retired by the team.

He finished his career with 3,184 hits, 431 home runs, and 1,695 RBI.

The Ravens also announced that Jacoby Jones was their Legend of the Game and that pre-game will feature a flyover by four A-10s. Jimmy East World will perform at halftime.

Parking lots for the game open at noon, followed by the Ravenswalk at 12:30 p.m. Gates open at 2:30 p.m.
