Philadelphia Phillies Fans Impressed MLB Insider During Opening Weekend

The Philadelphia Phillies' biggest takeaway from Opening Weekend has all to do with the loudest fan base in baseball.

The Philadelphia Phillies went 1-2 during Opening Weekend, dropping the series to the Atlanta Braves, the club's biggest rival. It was a disappointing start to the year, but the Phillies fought back in Game 3 and came away with a much-needed win.

They’ll host the Cincinnati Reds for a three-game set starting on Monday night, a series that should put them back on track.

After giving up 21 runs through the first two games of the season, Philadelphia needed a win in the worst way on Sunday. They were down 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning, scoring three runs in the frame and holding on for a 5-4 win.

Those three runs sparked an eruption of loud cheers from the fans, something the crowd has become known for the past couple years.

In fact, that was the biggest Opening Weekend takeaway that Will Leitch of MLB.com had for the Phillies, writing about how loud this passionate fan base is.

During the 7th inning, fans started booing the umpires as Mark Wegner made a mistake during his replay announcement. Wegner was announcing the inning-ending double play, initially saying the runner at second base was out. No one in the crowd was questioning if the runner at second base was out, instead wondering if the runner at first base was out.

Wegner’s announcement received booing from the loudest fan base in baseball, leading to Phillies fans missing the second part of his announcement, which was good news for them. The Braves were put back on the field and Philadelphia took advantage of the call getting made in their favor.

The raucous fanbase will have another opportunity to watch their team in a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds starting Monday, this time hoping they have much more to cheer about.
