Philadelphia Phillies Loss to Padres Tightens NL Wild Card Race

The Philadelphia Phillies still control the top Wild Card spot, but they don't want to lose much more ground in the race.

The Philadelphia Phillies weren’t able to help themselves in terms of getting closer to clinching a National League Wild Card berth in their loss to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

The Padres shut out the Phillies, 8-0, out on the West Coast, so Philadelphia’s magic number to clinch a Wild Card berth remained the same, as the two teams right behind them — the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati — won, along with Miami, which is right on the outside looking in.

The Atlanta Braves have a stranglehold on the NL East, but the Phillies still have a cushion on the Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card race. But, with the Cubs pursuing the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League West, their hold on the Wild Card lead could change.

Below is an update on the race, with the current standings, magic numbers to clinch a Wild Card berth and the remaining schedules for the teams that are still in the race as the Phillies prepare to wrap up their series with the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.
