Phillies Now Seen as Team Who Can Make Big Splash Before Spring Training

The Philadelphia Phillies could be involved with the two top remaining free-agent pitchers.

The Philadelphia Phillies quiet offseason could be changing in the immediate future. With Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery on the market, rumors are starting to suggest that the Phillies might make a play for one of them

By next Thursday, pitchers and catchers for every team in baseball will have reported to Spring Training. Their early arrivals are a necessity as pitchers ramp up for the new season.

While agent Scott Boras has never been one to rush or take a cheaper deal, it's time for him to figure something out for his clients.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com writes that Philadelphia is a team that didn't originally seem likely to make a move for either pitcher, but there have been ramped-up rumors recently that suggest they could.

Feinsand writes that Dave Dombrowski said he didn't expect any new moves, but also pointed to what he had to what the GM said on 94 WIP-FM.

“I can't tell you that somebody doesn't fall into your lap at some point where you say, 'Gee, that's an opportunity we can't turn down.'"

Dombrowski has been as aggressive as anyone when it comes to making moves. At this rate, it feels like Snell or Montgomery is falling in his lap.

Another addition could put this Phillies team over the top.

As currently constructed, they have more than enough talent to get the job done. When adding in another ace-caliber arm, they can stack up against any team in baseball.

With the additions the Los Angeles Dodgers made this offseason, Philadelphia has some catching up to do in terms of talent.

Snell and Montgomery have their flaws, but they're the top remaining pitchers on the market and can help an already above-average rotation.
