AL East Rival Reportedly Cuts Former Red Sox Slugger; Should Boston Consider Reunion?

Should Boston consider a reunion with the slugger?

One former member of the Boston Red Sox is a free agent once again.

Former Red Sox slugger Franchy Cordero signed with the Orioles this offseason after being non-tendered by Boston but didn't make the club out of spring training and reportedly was released Monday afternoon, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

Cordero spent the last two seasons in the Red Sox system after being acquired by the club from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Andrew Benintendi. The 28-year-old slugger appeared in 132 games for Boston and slashed .209/.279/.350 to go along with nine home runs and 38 RBIs.

Baltimore's release of Cordero comes as somewhat of a surprise after an extremely impressive spring. Cordero fought for one of the Orioles' bench spots and did all he could and slashed an impressive .413/.426/.674 across 18 games played to go along with two home runs and nine RBIs. Cordero also chipped in four doubles and stole a base.

Now that Cordero is back on the open market, he likely will be picked up by a club after an impressive spring. Cordero may have been inconsistent with Boston, but he also has shown flashes of power at the big league and can play all over the field.

While Boston seems pretty content heading into the 2023 season with its roster, maybe a reunion with Cordero wouldn't be bad. If Boston could bring Cordero back on a minor-league deal, maybe he could give the team even more depth. Boston already sent slugger Bobby Dalbec down to the minors and has some more difficult decisions to make.

A reunion may be unlikely, but adding more veteran depth to the minors never hurts.
