Red Sox Fan-Favorite Officially Didn't Make Opening Day Roster; What's Next For Slugger?

Boston made a difficult decision Monday morning

The Boston Red Sox are making some decisions.

Boston entered spring training with plenty of question marks. The Red Sox seemed to have a surplus at multiple positions, so there were some position battles throughout camp. One that caught the eye of fans the most was between slugger Bobby Dalbec and utility infielder Yu Chang.

Dalbec at one point seemed poised to take over first base for the team for years to come, but after inconsistent play over the last two seasons, his role with the team has completely changed. Triston Casas will be the team's starting first baseman in 2023, and Dalbec entered camp without a concrete role.

The 27-year-old battled Chang for the team's backup infielder spot and after much speculation, the team made their decision. Chang earned the final infield spot and Boston optioned Dalbec to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, according to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.

The decision doesn't come as too much of a surprise. Dalbec had an up-and-down spring training and although he certainly still has plenty of upside at just 27-years-old, everyday at-bats in the minors should do him some good. Chang can help out Boston at pretty much any infield position and although he wasn't with the club for much of spring training, he put on a show at the World Baseball Classic.

Dalbec may never be an everyday player for the Red Sox again, but he can be a productive big leaguer. Solid play in the minors can increase his trade stock and potentially lead him to a fresh start.

Hopefully Dalbec is able to make the most of his return to the minors and find his way back to the big leagues.
