Red Sox Call Up Pair Of Relievers To Replace John Schreiber, Brennan Bernardino

Boston continues to shake up the pitching staff

The Boston Red Sox are calling up two new faces to replace a pair of veterans on the active roster.

During the team's fourth consecutive loss -- a 10-1 beatdown by the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park on Monday -- right-hander John Schreiber had to exit early with a lat strain that placed him on the 15-day injured list.

Shortly after the game the Red Sox also decided to option left-handed reliever Brennan Bernardino to Triple-A Worcester due to poor performance in his most recent outings -- including Monday.

With two open roster spots, the Red Sox decided to inject new life onto the roster.

The Red Sox have called up right-hander Justin Garza and left-hander Ryan Sherriff from Triple-A Worcester, the team announced Tuesday.

Garza was claimed off of waivers at the end of April after being designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels. The 29-year-old has a 3.95 ERA with a 13-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio and .240 batting average against in 13 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season.

Sherriff was acquired in the offseason and has been effective for the WooSox. The former Tampa Bay Rays hurler has a 3.00 ERA with a 16-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio and .211 batting average against in 15 innings of work.

While both players are likely to be supplanted by the impending returns of Kutter Crawford and Garrett Whitlock, Sherriff might have a sliver of a chance to stick around.

Fellow left-hander Joely Rodriguez has yet to make his debut this season but is expected to keep his roster spot. However, Sherriff might have a shot to steal Richard Bleier's role if the big southpaw continues to struggle against his own side of the plate.

It'll be interesting to see how the bullpen shakes out as the Red Sox continue their series against the Mariners on Tuesday night.
