Red Sox Continue To Be Mentioned As Option To Sign Star Pitcher

It sounds like Boston still is looking to land one of the top free agents left

The Boston Red Sox still have plenty of money to spend.

Boston has significantly cut payroll and has wiggle room if it wants to make another addition or two before Opening Day. There still are two frontline starters available in free agency in Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery.

The Red Sox have been linked to both hurlers -- although a deal with Montgomery is seen as a more likely option.

It's unclear if Boston ultimately will end up landing either starter because it has decided to cut spending. Although this is the case, the Red Sox still are viewed as a possible option to land either, according to MLB Network's Jon Morosi.

"A one-year deal depends on how you define it," Morosi said. "Does this end up being a strict one-year deal, period? Or is it a one-year deal in the way that (Matt Chapman) and (Cody Bellinger) contracts are one-year deals, which is that it is the player's option effectively a three-year deal with an opt-out.

I think that becomes the question here and I should also mention the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox have been mentioned but haven't spent as much as they typically do but it would not surprise me."

Boston's biggest weakness is its starting rotation. The Red Sox are expected by many to finish at the bottom of the American League East again. Landing either Montgomery or Snell could help change this fact and put the club back in contention for a playoff spot.
