Red Sox's Top Competition For Star Free Agent Drops Out Of Bidding War

Boston's odds of landing an impact arm have improved

The Boston Red Sox have been in the running for landing a premier frontline starter all offseason and their odds of landing him should have just increased.

In what can only be seen as an anomaly, Jordan Montgomery has still not signed with a team. Thankfully for the teams still interested in signing the former World Series Champion, the Montgomery sweepstakes is now filled with less competition.

Texas Rangers general manager Chris Young called a reunion with Montgomery "unlikely" while appearing on 96.7's "The Ticket."

The national media has painted the Montgomery bidding as a war between the Red Sox and Rangers. The latter is waiving the white flag.

Although Boston continues to be linked to Montgomery, it still seems unlikely due to the hefty deal that the 31-year-old is searching for and the direction that Boston is heading in.

All winter long, ownership has made it known that they are not willing to spend and have shifted their focus towards allowing some younger guys to make a name for themselves.

With that philosophy and the long-term deal that Montgomery is seeking, it seems like the two sides won't reach an agreement.

With that being said, someone is going to have to sign Montgomery at some point. With the Rangers essentially taking themselves out of the running, it can only increase Boston's odds and could lead to Montgomery allowing a little wiggle room with his contract.
