Red Sox Reportedly Showing Interest In Free-Agent Starter After Strong Season

Boston is looking to improve their rotation

The Boston Red Sox need to fill multiple cracks in their roster and starting pitching is at the top of that list.

The Major League Baseball Winter Meetings are finally underway in Nashville, and some early rumors are already floating around.

It's no secret that the Red Sox are prioritizing pitching this offseason, but one player has already been linked to Boston

"I thought they would do something big, so far they haven't been tied to anyone big," the New York Post's Jon Heyman reported on a Bleacher Report live stream on Monday afternoon. "I do know that they are in on (Seth) Lugo"

Lugo had a 3.57 ERA with a 140-to-36 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .249 batting average against with a 1.20 WHIP in 146 1/3 innings pitched across 26 games for the San Diego Padres last season.

The righty would be a great fit in Boston as the Red Sox look to add starting pitching. Lugo has a career 115 ERA+ and would factor in as as mid-level rotation option, ideally in the No. 3 or No. 4 slot.

The Red Sox also showed interest in Lugo last offseason before he signed a two-year, $15 million deal with the Padres. Now that he's opted out of Year 2, he once again could come to Boston.
