Yankees DFA Former Red Sox Outfielder To Bolster Roster With Younger Talent

The veteran outfielder had a short stint with Boston earlier this season

The Boston Red Sox appear to have won a trade against a division rival just days after they swept them in their home stadium.

The New York Yankees designated outfielder Greg Allen for assignment on Tuesday according to the Major League Baseball transaction log.

Allen had a .217 batting average including two extra-base hits and one home run, with one RBI and a .811 OPS in 22 games this season for New York.

The 30-year-old was traded from the Red Sox to the Yankees in exchange for 19-year-old pitching prospect Diego Hernandez in May after a strong showing in Triple-A Worcester.

Hernandez posted a 2.10 ERA with a .188 batting average against, 48-to-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and a 1.11 WHIP in 34 1/3 innings pitched across 12 games in the Dominican Summer League last season. He has not played a game yet for Boston due to an elbow surgery that is expected to keep him out for the rest of the season.

The young hurler is a lottery ticket the Red Sox will get to hold onto while Allen hits the waiver wire and could potentially leave the Yankees organization in short order.
