Yankees Sign Ex-Red Sox Pitcher To Bolster Bullpen Depth For 2023 Season

A division rival looks to strengthen their bullpen with a former Red Sox pitcher

A former Boston Red Sox pitcher that has not suited up at Fenway Park since the 2021 season is joining an American League East foe.

The 30-year-old has not played in the big leagues since his time with the Red Sox he'll aim to return on the other side of the rivalry

“Right-handed pitcher Colten Brewer, who was reassigned by (Tampa Bay) Rays to minors, instead will go to (New York) Yankees and be added to their 40-man roster via an assignment clause,” Tampa Bay Times's Marc Topkin tweeted Thursday.

Brewer spent the 2022 season in the Kansas City Royals minor-league system and then signed with the Rays this winter.

Following his release from the Rays, Brewer has found himself rostered on the Yankees in a trade for cash considerations according to the MLB transaction wire.

The Yankees picked up the veteran hurler on Thursday night, after their 5-0 Opening Day win over the San Francisco Giants.

During his last season with the Red Sox, Brewer posted a 4.00 ERA with an 18-to-9 strikeout-to-walk-ratio, 1.33 WHIP and .224 batting average against in 18.0 innings for Triple-A Worcester.

He also allowed four earned runs in his lone inning at the big-league level that season.

Brewer appeared in 70 games for Boston from 2019 through 2021 but failed to solidify a role.

Brewer now has multiple opportunities to take the mound against his former team this season, presuming he can work his onto the Yankees' 26-man roster.
