Report: Nick Gordon loses his arbitration hearing with Twins

The Twins utility man has an uncertain role in 2024.

Minnesota Twins utility man Nick Gordon has lost his arbitration hearing with the team and is set to make $900,000 during the 2024 season.

That's the word from MLB Network's Mark Feinsand, who said Gordon went to arbitration with hopes of being awarded a $1.25 million contract to play in 2024.

Gordon came into last season looking to build off a surprising 2022 campaign in which he hit .272/.316/.427 with nine homers and 50 RBI in 136 games. But Gordon, who was the fifth overall pick in the 2012 MLB draft, struggled to find the same form, hitting .176/.185/.319 with two homers and seven RBI in 34 games before suffering a broken right tibia when he fouled a ball off his leg during a May 17 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Gordon attempted to return for the Twins' playoff push but was left off the roster for the American League Wild Card Series against the Toronto Blue Jays and the AL Divisional Series against the Houston Astros.

As the 28-year-old reports for spring training, his role with the Twins in 2024 seems uncertain. Willi Castro took on Gordon's role after his injury and hit .257/.339/.411 with nine homers, 34 RBI and a team-high 33 stolen bases in 124 games last season. Eddy Julien and Royce Lewis have taken over everyday spots in the infield and Kyle Farmer remains on the roster despite trade rumors this winter.

With top prospect Brooks Lee also looking to make his debut this summer, Gordon, who is out of minor league options, could be a victim of the numbers game this spring.
