Yankees Had 'Late Talks' With Star Free Agent But Couldn't Get Massive Deal Done

New York reportedly tried to sign the superstar but missed out

The New York Yankees need to go back to the drawing board.

New York has a massive hole in the starting rotation after discovering that ace Gerrit Cole will be out for at least one or two months due to an elbow injury.

Even before Cole's injury was announced there was speculation that the club could make another addition. Talks have picked up even more since the announcement of Cole's injury.

New York heavily was linked to two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell but reportedly missed out as the San Francisco Giants swooped in and got a deal done.

While the Yankees missed out on Snell, they did attempt to get a deal done at the end up couldn't, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"Reigning National League Cy Young winner Blake Snell has agreed to a $62 million, two-year deal with the San Francisco Giants after some late talks with the Yankees didn’t result in a deal, The Post has learned," Heyman said. "Snell’s deal with the Giants includes an opt-out after the first year. It is pending a physical.

"With this blockbuster late-spring signing, the Giants form a superb one-two rotation punch, as Snell now combines with ace right-hander Logan Webb."

Snell would've been a great addition and certainly would've helped the rotation out, but he ultimately was too expensive for New York.

If the Yankees want to make another addition, there still are some solid options out there that could help. Snell won't be coming to New York this season but there is a chance he enters free agency again next offseason.
