2007 Preakness Stakes
Nine 3-year-old horses ran in the 132nd Preakness Stakes, compared to 20 at the Kentucky Derby earlier in the month. Curlin (fourth from left) started slow due to a slight stumble out of the gates.
Both Curlin (4) and Street Sense were back in the pack early in the race before making their moves late.
With a record crowd of 121,263 cheering in anticipation of a Triple Crown bid in the making, Street Sense (right) begins to hear the footsteps of the charging Curlin on the final stretch.
Jockey Robby Albarado (left) went into an all-out drive for the finish, as Curlin beat Street Sense by a head in one of the most thrilling Preakness finishes in years.
Jockey Calvin Borel (in yellow) thought he had another Triple Crown victory when he broke clear of the field. "I thought I was home free," Borel said. "He came and got me. No excuses."
Members of Curlin's camp accept the Woodlawn Vase, the Preakness Stakes' official trophy, which is considered one of the most valuable in sports.
