So much for Alex Rodriguez sneaking meekly into retirement. In case there were any questions about his immediate plans -- and there shouldn't have been -- Rodriguez made it clear [Thursday] he intends to return to play baseball, just as he did prior to this week's explosive performance-enhancing drug development. There will be no early retirement. "Alex is working diligently on his rehabilitation and looks forward to getting back on the field as soon as possible," a source close to Rodriguez told The Post. ... Ainge prefers Pierce retires in green, too
Celtics president Danny Ainge took the occasion of his weekly radio appearance to speak frankly about how the team shapes up in the absence of their point guard. [Ainge] spoke openly about the state of his team. He made two things clear following Rajon Rondo's season-ending ACL injury: 1) "It's silly" to think they'll be better without him and 2) Paul Pierce trades haven't been discussed. ... Pierce's name has been thrown around in trade rumors. His contract, which has just $5 million guaranteed for next season, seemingly makes him an attractive target around the league. "Nothing has been talked about with Paul," said Ainge. "Nothing is close to being done. I too would like to see Paul retire as a Celtic. That would be great. We're all attached to Paul." Reid ready to court Alex Smith (again)?
Could Alex Smith follow the path of Joe Montana -- from San Francisco to Kansas City? [On Thursday], ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer said new Kansas City coach Andy Reid, then with the Eagles, expressed interest in acquiring Smith when he was a free agent after the 2011 season. According to Dilfer, Reid "really likes Alex." "There was a courtship last year, to a certain degree," Dilfer said. Asked for specifics of Philadelphia's dalliance with Smith, he said, "I don't know a whole lot. I just know there was a courtship. It was not even an inside source, you know what I mean? It was just kind of the scuttle in the offseason." Dilfer and Smith are close friends who were teammates in San Francisco from 2006-07. (San Francisco Chronicle)Comment
