All eyes were on Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs Summer League roster on Friday. But things didn’t quite go as planned for the 7-foot-4 phenom.

Despite a strong defensive performance — five blocks and plenty more altered shots — Wembanyama struggled to see the ball through the hoop, shooting just two-for-13 overall and one-for-six from beyond the arc to net just nine points.

Even more, there were a few moments that didn’t necessarily go his way.

It’s hard to blame Wembanyama for a shaky shooting performance, as mere weeks ago he played in the LNB Pro A Final for the Metropolitans 92, and hasn’t seen much competitive action since.

On Sunday, Wembanyama will hopefully have the chance to rebound and find his offensive groove agains the Portland Trail Blazers. It was supposed to be a marquee matchup and rematch between Wembanyama and third overall pick Scoot Henderson, who unfortunately is out of the contest to rest a shoulder injury he suffered Friday.

The two met in Las Vegas once before in a few matchups between Henderson’s G League Ignite and Wembanyama’s Mets 92.

Regardless of how he fares in Summer League action, the Frenchman will be the favorite to take home the 2023-24 Rookie of the Year Award via his blend of size, fluidity and prowess on both ends of the court.

The Spurs and Trail Blazers tip off at 5 p.m. PT on Sunday from Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
