NBA Draft Scouting Report: Indiana's Mackenzie Mgbako

Scouting Report: Mackenzie Mgbako

Mackenzie Mgbako

Forward | Indiana

Height: 6'8” | Weight: 195 lbs

2024 Draft Age: 19.59

Mackenzie Mgbako, Duke

Prospect Profile

Although he was originally committed to Duke, Mgbako is headed to Indiana for his freshman season as he looks to be a one-and-done player. He the tools to be a great modern forward, but also the throwback power forward skillset sprinkled in. He has a great mix of wing and forward skills, which is key since he isn’t an elite athlete.

What’s most promising about Mgbako is that he has a smooth jumper while standing at 6-foot-8. He can shoot it well from the midrange and beyond the arc and isn’t afraid to shoot on high volume. He has a high release and effortless stroke for his size. When he does get to the rim, Mgbako finishes well with both hands and soft touch.

He’s truly a mismatch on offense, given slender wings struggle to contain him and bigs get lost handling him on the perimeter. Depending on who is defending him, Mgbako can play bully ball with his back to the basket or operate on the perimeter.

While he can pull down rebounds and push the ball, he’s doesn’t fit the point forward archetype quite yet. However, he is comfortable handling for his size. Mgbako is also a solid positional passer and good connector that keeps the offense flowing.

The defensive versatility he possesses is intriguing, especially since he has the frame and traits to potentially guard upwards of three or four different positions at the next level.

The former five-star and top-10 recruit has what it takes the truly impact the college game from day one. He will have the opportunity to play alongside other NBA prospects like Kel’el Ware and Malik Reneau, among others.
