Judge Makes Ruling in Ja Morant Court Case

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant acted in self defense

While criminal charges were never filed against Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant for his altercation with Joshua Holloway, civil cases have been ongoing. For those unfamiliar, Morant and then 17-year-old Holloway had an altercation over a pickup basketball game in July of 2022. The altercation led to Morant striking Holloway, which the Grizzlies star has since claimed was in self-defense.

In an article on Tuesday from Baxter Holmes of ESPN, it was revealed that a Tennesee judge ruled that Morant did indeed act in self defense, which is a win for the Grizzlies star and his legal team.

"In a win for Ja Morant, a Tennessee judge ruled Monday that the Memphis Grizzlies superstar fairly acted in self-defense when he punched a teenager at Morant's home in July 2022, according to a court filing obtained by ESPN," Holmes reported.

Providing additional details obtained by ESPN, Holmes added, "In Monday's filing, Shelby County Circuit Judge Carol Chumney ruled Morant 'enjoys a presumption of civil immunity' under Tennessee's self-defense immunity statute and that the burden of proof shifts to Holloway and his legal team to prove that Morant didn't act in self-defense."

Morant has played just nine games this season after being suspended to begin the year and injuring his shoulder shortly after returning. He is expected to be ready to play again when next season begins.
