Roger Federer was in tears when he said goodbye to tennis following a double match with a longtime and contemporary rival Rafael Nadal beside him for a 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 9-11 against Americans Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock at the Laver Cup.

“It was never supposed to be that way. I was just happy to play tennis and spend time with my friends, really,” Federer said. “It’s been a perfect journey. I would do it all over again.”

"It's been so much fun. It’s been amazing; thank you, everybody. I've had so many people cheer me on, and you guys here tonight means the world."

After the match, ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates reacted to Federer's final tennis match.

"Seeing Rafa cry after Roger’s final match of his career. Just wow. The respect every player - even his most intense rival - had for Federer says it all," tweeted Yates.

Yates' comments would catch the attention of Suns All-Star guard Chris Paul, who shared the post on his Instagram story with the caption 'respect.'

Earlier this month, Roger Federer announced his retirement from professional tennis.

"I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career," the 20-time grand slam winner said in an Instagram post.

"As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries," he said. "I've worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body's capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear."

After Federer made his intentions public, Rafael Nadal took to Twitter to give him his flowers.

"Dear Roger, my friend, and rival. I wish this day would have never come. It’s a sad day for me personally and for sports around the world. It’s been a pleasure but also an honor and privilege to share all these years with you, living so many amazing moments on and off the court, tweeted Nadal

He added, "We will have many more moments to share together in the future; there are still lots of things to do together, we know that. For now, I truly wish you all the happiness with your wife, Mirka, your kids, and your family, and enjoy what’s ahead of you. I’ll see you in London @LaverCup."

Federer, in his career, won 103 ATP singles titlesincluding 20 major singles titles.
