Martin Mayhew still trying to help Titus Young 'deal with his problems'

INDIANAPOLIS -- Detroit general manager Martin Mayhew said that the Lions have "closed the door" on troublesome wide receiver Titus Young, echoing Jim Schwartz's comments from Thursday.

But Mayhew added that he has reached out to Young, in hopes of getting the former Boise State star back on track.

"I want to help him deal with his problems," Mayhew said, "whatever they are."

Schwartz was less supportive of Young during his combine press conference, stating that "it's up to him and 31 other teams" to determine if Young has any remaining value as an NFL player.

The St. Louis Rams claimed Young off waivers after the Lions released him, only to also cut him loose less than two weeks later. Schwartz said that he did not have any discussions with Rams head coach Jeff Fisher about Young; Fisher and Schwartz worked together in Tennessee for two seasons.

"We felt it was best to go in another direction," Fisher said upon Young's second release of this offseason. "We felt Titus is better suited for another organization."

It could be a long wait until Young finds team No. 3 to take a chance on him, despite the potential he flashed from time to time as a Lion. So long as he's the Lions' GM, Mayhew will not be the guy to hand Young his next contract.

Instead, he'll simply try to keep a talented player from becoming too far gone.
