Report: Raiders would start Derek Carr over Matt Schaub only in 'catastrophic' scenario

Derek Carr unlikely to pass Matt Schaub in Raiders quarterback battle

In the second round of the NFL draft this year, the Oakland Raiders went out and grabbed one of the players that they had been rumored to be coveting for months leading up to the event in Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr. This move came on the heels of the team trading a sixth-round pick to the Houston Texans for veteran Matt Schaub earlier this offseason.

With the Raiders taking one of the best signal-callers in the draft with their second-round selection, some wondered if there could be a quarterback controversy brewing in Oakland between Schaub and Carr.

ESPN's Jim Trotter points out that won't be the case, as head coach Dennis Allen is set on Schaub being his man under center in 2014 and it'll take something "catastrophic" for Carr to leap over him on the depth chart.

Last season in Houston was undoubtedly the worst of Schaub's 10-year career in the league. He only played in 10 games in 2013, tossing 10 touchdowns to 14 interceptions, so it's easy to believe that there's a chance Carr could actually outplay him.
