49ers coach Jim Harbaugh: Colin Kaepernick poised for a breakout year

Two seasons ago, following an injury to then 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, the NFL world was introduced to one of the most dynamic players in the game today in Colin Kaepernick. In a season and a half as the starter in San Francisco, Kaepernick has led the team to two straight NFC Championship Game appearances, the first of which resulted in a victory and a trip to the Super Bowl.

It's scary to think that Kaepernick, just 26, can only get better from here, but that's exactly what head coach Jim Harbaugh believes will happen, starting with a breakout season in 2014.

“I really expect that real breakout year for Colin,” Jim Harbaugh said after his team’s second OTA session on Wednesday.

Kaepernick was amazing in 2013 in leading the team to that second straight NFC title game appearance, throwing for 3,197 yards, 21 touchdowns and just eight interceptions, while also adding in 524 yards rushing and four scores.

He was able to be that effective despite the team suffering from a lack of depth; so it's easy to see how Harbaugh could believe that we're going to see the best of Kaepernick this year with the offseason additions of Stevie Johnson, Brandon Llyod and draft pick Bruce Ellington.

The fourth-year quarterback feels the same way, according to Harbaugh.

“‘Kap’ said it the other day. He feels like he has a stable of receivers and maybe that’s the first time we’ve said that since we’ve all been here together,” Harbaugh said. “I concur. It feels that way.”
