John McCain said in a radio interview Wednesday that he thinks Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel needs to grow up.

The Arizona senator commented on Manziel and the obscene gesture he flashed towards the Redskins' bench in Monday night's preseason game against the Redskins.

"I just think he’s gotta grow up," McCain said. "When I was a young navy pilot, I’m glad that I wasn’t on national television. That’s all I can tell you."

McCain added that Manziel is a "great competitor."

Manziel has generated headlines with his exciting dual-threat quarterback play and off-field antics at Texas A&M and with the Cleveland Browns.

Earlier this week, the Browns announced that veteran Brian Hoyer had beat out Manziel for the team's starting quarterback job.
