As expected, the Jets officially named Geno Smith their starting quarterback after Friday's 35-24 preseason loss to the Giants at MetLife Stadium, according to ESPN.com's Rich Cimini.

The second-year man out of West Virginia beat out veteran Michael Vick, who had said he expected Smith to win the job.

Smith, a second-round pick in 2013, won the starting job last season after Mark Sanchez was hurt in last year's preseason game against the Giants. He threw 12 touchdown passes and 21 interceptions in 16 games and fumbled four times.

But Smith has completed 70 percent of his passes in the preseason for 268 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He has taken about 80 percent of the first-team reps in training camp, Cimini reports.

The Jets open the season at home against the Raiders on Sept. 7.
