Eagles' Kelly, Indy's Luck familiar from college

PHILADELPHIA (AP) For now, Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly is up on Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck in head-to-head matches.

But that was college. They're meeting for the first time in the NFL when the Eagles play in Indianapolis on Monday night.

Kelly and Luck met three times in NCAA games when the coach led Oregon and the quarterback played for Stanford. Kelly went 2-1.

Kelly says there's everything to like about Luck.

''He's 6-4, 235 pounds. He's the smartest guy you're going to go against,'' Kelly said before practice on Thursday. ''He can make every throw in the book and he also runs a 4.65. Everything is good.''

Luck returns the respect, it'll be fun to play against Kelly again.

''Going to school at Stanford, (it) has become a very good rivalry with Oregon in large part because of him and what we did at Stanford,'' Luck told reporters during a conference call. ''What he does, I think, is very inventive and really good football.''

Luck beat Kelly and Oregon the first time the two met during his sophomore year in 2009, as he threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns to upset the seventh-ranked Ducks.

Kelly and Oregon returned the favor each of the next two years in matchups of two top 10 teams.

Both Luck and Kelly have had early success in the NFL. Luck made the playoffs each of his first two years. Kelly's Eagles won the NFC East last year, his first year after taking over a team that finished 4-12 in 2012.

The No. 1 overall pick of the 2012 draft, Luck has also engineered 11 fourth-quarter or overtime game-winning drives.

The Eagles coach says he knows what to expect from the Colts quarterback Monday night.

''What separates Andrew from a lot of other great quarterbacks is he has the ability to extend plays, not only staying in the pocket, but he can hurt you running the football,'' Kelly said. ''That's rare for a guy his size.''

Kelly says Luck is as mentally sharp as some of the game's other top quarterbacks, including Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees.

''I don't think there is anything you can throw at him that he is going to say he's never seen it,'' Kelly said. ''So he really has the whole package.''

Eagles defensive coordinator Bill Davis will be the one trying to come up with something new to throw at Luck that works.

''He's a tough sack when he's in the pocket and has the athleticism and speed to get out of the pocket,'' Davis said. ''When you're in your man concept, he sees them and goes. He sees lanes and he's got the big arm. You can see why he was (No. 1 pick in the draft) and why he's had the success in two years he's had.''

NOTES: Tackle Matt Tobin (ankle) and rookie wide receiver/kick returner Josh Huff (shoulder) remained the only Eagles players to not practice. ... Kelly on why he traded with the Colts for kicker Cody Parkey, instead of waiting for him to clear waivers: ''If he went to the waiver wire we were 22 on the waiver wire, and we may not have gotten him. If someone ahead of us was looking for a kicker, they may have claimed him before we did.''
