Chargers Claim Safety From Falcons Following Season-Ending Injury to Raheem Layne
The Los Angeles Chargers worked quickly to find a new safety. Just one day after they announced that safety Raheem Layne tore his ACL and would be out for the season, the Chargers added safety Jaylinn Hawkins via waivers from the Atlanta Falcons.
The Chargers were reportedly not the only team to put a claim in for Hawkins, but came away with him, per NFL.com insider Ian Rapoport.
Hawkins is in the midst of his fourth year in the NFL, all with Atlanta. Hawkins had played in all six of the Falcons' games this season, but didn't start any of them, and had just three tackles.
Last year, Hawkins started all 16 games he appeared in for Atlanta in his first full year as a starter. He totaled 84 tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery that turned into a touchdown.
The former fourth round pick in the 2020 draft has shown tons of promise, and will now be replacing Layne in the Chargers' secondary.
He could end up being a sneaky good pickup for LA, as they look to get their season back on track after an ugly home loss to the Dallas Cowboys this past Monday night.
It remains to be seen if Hawkins is able to play this weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead stadium.
