Charger Experts Weigh In on LA's Second-Year CB Role

The second-year corner could play a big role in 2023

As the Los Angeles Chargers gear up for the 2023 training camp, all eyes are on their defense, which underachieved in the previous season. However, there is hope that the Charger defense will show its true potential this year. One key highlight of the secondary is Derwin James Jr., a talented player whose presence will be crucial. Additionally, cornerback J.C. Jackson is set to make a comeback after recovering from a season-ending knee injury, adding strength to the defense.

One area of concern for the Chargers is their secondary, which appears to have some question marks. Aside from James and Jackson, there are young and unproven players on the roster, such as second-year cornerback Deane Leonard.

The people over at Charger Wire are reviewing the 2023 roster and provided insight on the type of role Leonard could play this season.

While he won’t be pushing for a starting job in Los Angeles’ secondary, Leonard should continue to be a special teams ace and provide depth in case of an injury.

Leonard participated in 17 games and managed to record one forced fumble and five tackles. If the opportunity presented itself, Leonard could step up and play a more significant role in 2023.

Although Leonard has potential, there are uncertainties about his position. It seems that the team may utilize him in a different capacity rather than strictly at cornerback. To have a successful season, Leonard will need to excel in the role assigned to him and continue to improve throughout the year.
