Chargers News: Brandon Staley Hired By NFC West Squad

He's back...

Former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley has landed his next gig, with one of the more prolific (if fruitless) Super Bowl squads of recent years.

Per Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports, the three-year LA head coach will serve in an undefined "prominent staff role" with the San Francisco 49ers. The report suggests Staley could be an assistant head coach behind Kyle Shanahan.

Staley, who was the defensive coordinator under head coach Sean McVay during the Los Angeles Rams' march to the Super Bowl in 2021, will not serve in that capacity with San Francisco. Instead, former Niners defensive passing game/nickels coach Nick Sorensen has been elevated to that role. The club's 303.9 yards of total enemy offense permitted per bout equipped Los Angeles with the No. 8 defense during the 2023 season.

But after San Francisco lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime during this year's Super Bowl, general manager John Lynch canned former defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, creating an opening on one of the better NFL teams in recent vintage. The club has made the postseason in four of the last five seasons, and has appeared in three Super Bowls since 2012, including two under Shanahan's regime. Current Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh, Staley's replacement, was responsible for the club's '12 appearance in the big game.
