Chargers News: Brandon Staley Under Consideration For Gig With Super Bowl Team?

Why?

Former Los Angeles Chargers head coach may be headed to this year’s Super Bowl also-rans.

Per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, growing speculation around the NFL suggests San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan may consider bringing in Staley, who did win a Super Bowl as the defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, to replace fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

Shanahan fired Wilks earlier this week, just days removed from the Niners’ stunning overtime defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs, who rallied back from a 10-point deficit late in the contest’s fairly boring first half. Wilks had been with San Francisco for just one season, after serving as the Carolina Panthers’ interim head coach for much of 2022.

Though Staley has been lauded as a defensive mastermind, his Chargers defenses consistently struggled throughout his LA tenure. He never once landed the Bolts higher than the 20th-ranked defense in the league across his three seasons at the helm. This happened despite LA boasting one of the great defenders of his generation, linebacker Khalil Mack — who is still playing at a Pro Bowl level — for the last two of those Staley seasons.

Perhaps Shanahan is just casting a wide net, and wants to at least consider all viable possibilities?
