Chargers News: Former Bolts Coach Returns To Fill Out Jim Harbaugh's Staff

The Chargers brought back this assistant coach.

Your Los Angeles Chargers under new head coach Jim Harbaugh are returning former quarterbacks coach Shane Day, who previously was the Bolts' quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator from 2021-2022, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic.

Day will reunite with Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who he coached for two years before leaving to become the Houston Texans senior offensive assistant in 2023.

Day was Herbert's quarterback coach for two of his best seasons as a pro, including when Herbert threw for 5,014 yards and 38 touchdowns while earning his lone Pro Bowl nod in 2021. He also coached Herbert in 2022, when he made his lone career playoff appearance.

The return of Day will hopefully provide some comfortability for Herbert, who is once again receiving a new coaching staff and offensive coordinator. Jim Harbaugh will now be the third head coach Herbert has worked under and Greg Roman is his fourth NFL offensive coordinator.

In addition, Day brings extensive experience as a quarterbacks coach and NFL offensive assistant coach. He has previously been the quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers, Connecticut and Chicago Bears. He's also served as a tight ends coach for the Miami Dolphins, and an offensive quality control coach for Michigan and the 49ers.

Day is also different than several from several of Harbaugh's other staff hires in that he has not worked under Harbaugh previously, unlike defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, offensive coordinator Greg Roman and strength coach Ben Herbert. However, the changeup could be a positive as Day will bring a different voice and experience into the offensive staff.
