The Los Angeles Chargers needed another pass catcher, and the team did just that through the NFL Draft last week. The Chargers selected one of the best wide receivers last season, Quentin Johnston. Johnston was the second wide receiver taken, and the pick surprised almost every Charger fan.

Fans initially had mixed emotions about it, but Chargers' new Offensive Coordinator, Kellen Moore, was surprised for another reason. Moore told Chargers expert John Dillion he was surprised the team, especially Brandon Staley, went offense with their first pick instead of defense.

“Brandon [Staley] is this defensive guy and he’s drafting these offensive guys, I like this,” Moore explained. “It’s a lot of fun. Q [Johnston] really stood out for us as we went through the process. Everyone kind of sees the measurables, the size as far as the height and the weight."

Staley is known as a defensive coach; he helped lead the 2020 LA Rams to the best defense in the league, leading him to secure the Charger HC job.

Moore loves his new rookie wide receiver and praised Johnston, calling him the most versatile receiver in the class.

“What he did for TCU from his versatility, I thought, was really, really special. His ability to kind of catch-and-run, he was a fly-sweep guy. He got the ball in a lot of different ways. You saw a lot of versatility in his game that maybe, initially, someone may not have necessarily anticipated. We were really excited that he was there and available for us.”

The 21-year-old receiver's game looks like it'll fit well under Moore's offense. Don't be surprised if Johnston emerges as one of the top rookie receivers this upcoming season.
