Chargers News: NFL Columnist Places Austin Ekeler With Much to Prove in 2023

A big year is ahead of the impending free agent

The 2023 season looms large for the Los Angeles Chargers, but it's not just the team's fate hanging in the balance; individual players are primed to make their mark. Some will shine, earning more playing time. Others will vie for starting positions, proving they're worthy of the spotlight. Then, there are those like star running back Austin Ekeler, who have their sights set on securing a hefty paycheck.

Ekeler is fresh off what could be considered the best season of his career. Despite requesting a trade and not receiving it, he's determined to prove that he deserves the financial recognition he seeks. This season, he's carrying an immense burden, whether self-imposed or imposed by pundits and experts. Yet, no one has higher expectations for Ekeler than himself.

Nonetheless, NFL columnist Dave Latham made a list of five NFL players with the most to prove, and Ekeler cracked the list.

The running back market is terrible right now, and Austin Ekeler is one of several NFL players struggling to get what he feels he’s owed. Ekeler will be back for at least one more season with the Los Angeles Chargers, but he’ll need to have his best season yet if he’s going to earn the type of contract he wants. Despite being one of the best backs in the league since taking over for Melvin Gordon, Ekeler’s livelihood is on the line, so he cannot afford a bad season.

The 28-year-old running back finds himself on this list for a reason. He has a lot to prove to himself, the Chargers organization, those who underestimate the value of running backs, and even the other 31 NFL teams.

Nevertheless, this isn't unfamiliar territory for Ekeler. His entire life has been a journey of proving himself. Undrafted, he defied the odds when the LA Chargers took a chance on him. From there, he fought his way onto the team and emerged as one of the most versatile running backs the sport has ever seen.

Though the pressure is undoubtedly high, there's an unwavering belief that Ekeler will rise to the occasion, week in and week out. His track record speaks for itself; he consistently shows up and delivers on the field.

For Ekeler, it's not just about proving others wrong; it's about proving himself right and solidifying his place among football's elite.
