Chargers News: NFL Writer Views LA Exercising Justin Herbert's Fifth-Year Option as Brilliant Move

Next up: A mega contract

The Los Angeles Chargers took care of business this offseason. Chargers GM Tom Telesco and the front office did their due diligence and improved the team that will look to compete in 2023.

LA drafted well and picked up some good free agents. Some will play a big role this upcoming season, and some will play a depth role. Many of the moves were brilliant, but none were bigger than the team exercising Justin Herbert's fifth-year option, at least according to CBS sports writer Cody Benjamin.

Exercising QB Justin Herbert's fifth-year option doesn't lock up the star signal-caller for the long term, but it sets the tone for building the franchise around his laser arm. Now, of course, they have to hope that new coordinator Kellen Moore and first-round WR Quentin Johnston help Herbert make a leap in the postseason.

This is the one Benjamin picked in an offseason where LA did a lot. I feel like this was a foregone conclusion, but it was still the right and obvious move.

The fifth-year option was the right move, but now we're all waiting for the big contract. Herbert and his team are working on a mega contract with the Chargers, and it could come in the coming weeks.

His contract will come, and it will be earned as Chargers insider Danie Popper predicts Herbert's contract will be six years, $295 million, with $135 million fully guaranteed at signing.

It's not a matter of if but when the 25-year-old quarterback will sign that deal. Nonetheless, securing your franchise QB is a good move for any team in the offseason.
