The Los Angeles Chargers have a lot going on right now; for one, they're in the midst of figuring out who they'll draft, and two, what will happen with their star running back, Austin Ekeler

Ekeler requested permission to talk to other teams three weeks ago as he is seeking a new contract. His current contract will expire at the end of the 2023 season, and he is looking for some big money after an incredible 2022 campaign.

As of today, there has yet to be traction between Ekeler and other teams. NFL reporter Bridget Condon says the relationship between Austin's camp and the Chargers remains cordial.

Ekeler is currently under his four-year, $25.5 million contract, and in the past two seasons, he has exceeded that dollar amount. The undrafted running back has had 25 rushing touchdowns and 13 receiving touchdowns while having a total of 3,195 yards through the air and the ground.

Austin has arguably been the best running back these past two seasons, and the numbers and productivity show that. Now just because he requested a trade doesn't mean it will happen. The Chargers are still very much in the mix of giving Ekeler the money he desires.

Ekeler has spent his entire career with the Bolts, and he and quarterback Justin Herbert have proven to be a dynamic duo in the backfield. It wouldn't be the end of the world if he got traded, but it could hurt the offesne to lose an explosive weapon like Ekeler.

I believe the 27-year-old will remain a Bolt. The Chargers will give him the money he deserves. Even though he deserves that money and will get it, that could hurt the chances of Herbert getting the money he deserves with the Chargers. He's approaching his fourth season and will look at big money coming his way. That's another discussion for another day, but that could potentially impact Herbert and his money with the Bolts.
